1. Choose a section that fits your trip
Many travelers connect Kandy, Nuwara Eliya via Nanu Oya, and Ella, but you do not need to ride the entire line to enjoy the highlands. A shorter section can leave more time for walking, tea estates, and local towns.
Compare your arrival and departure points before booking. Station transfers to places such as Nuwara Eliya require road travel from Nanu Oya, so include that time in the plan.
2. Understand tickets and seats
Reserved seats are limited on popular services. Check Sri Lanka Railways' current ticketing information and use official booking channels when reservations are available.
Unreserved travel can be busy, especially during holidays and peak periods. Do not rely on a last-minute seat for a tightly timed connection.
3. Expect weather and schedule changes
The highlands can be misty, rainy, or cool while lowland areas are warm. Rain can affect visibility and occasionally disrupt transport, so avoid scheduling a flight or non-refundable connection immediately after a long train ride.
Bring a light layer and keep valuables protected if showers are expected. View quality depends on cloud and conditions, not just the route.
4. Travel considerately
Keep aisles and doors clear, follow railway safety instructions, and avoid leaning out of open doors or windows. Do not block other passengers to take photographs.
Ask before taking close-up photos of people, and keep snacks and rubbish contained. A calm, observant journey is better for fellow travelers and local commuters.
5. Make time for the places along the way
The route passes through tea-growing landscapes and hill towns with their own character. A night in a highland town can turn a long transit into time for a walk, estate visit, or local meal.
Check local trail access and weather before setting out. Mountain paths can be slippery, and mist can reduce visibility.
